It’s official: Virgil Abloh is releasing 50 pairs of the Off-White x Nike Dunk Low before 2021 ends.
Dubbed the “Dear Summer” collection by the Illinois-native (and “The 50” by spectators on social media), the upcoming collaboration serves as Abloh’s most expansive project with NIKE, Inc. since 2017’s “The Ten,” which reimagined 10 silhouettes from under the North American conglomerate’s umbrella. Previously speculated to be a 20-pair lineup replete in almost two dozen different colorways, Off-White’s latest endeavor primarily focuses on one low-top Nike Dunk style and animates it with 48 varying over lace, tongue, sock-liner, zip tie, lot number and lateral swoosh underlay colors. Shoes numbered “01/50” and “50/50” forgo the white and light grey that take over much of the “Dear Summer” collection in favor of respective, rather tonal white and black outfits. Profile swooshes also indulge in a shimmering metallic silver that delivers a louder statement than the accompanying lots. Abloh hasn’t revealed the exact inspiration behind his latest collaboration, but those details are sure to arrive in the coming months. What’s certain however, is that “The 50” marks a turning point for Peter Moore’s 36-year-old design.
